“Where the civil war ended”

On Palm Sunday (April 9), 1865, Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Virginia signaled the end of the Southern States attempt to create a separate nation. It set the stage for the emergence of an expanded and more powerful Federal government. In a sense the struggle over how much power the central government would hold had finally been settled. Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is comprised of many original historic structures along with several reconstructed buildings on approximately 1,700 acres in rural southside Virginia. The village of Appomattox Court House was the site of the surrender of General Robert E. Lee, the event that signaled the end of four years of Civil War.
