“Take a Holiday on Lake Holliday”

Deep in the Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, Holliday Lake is a paradise for the outdoor enthusiast. Fishing for largemouth bass, crappie and bluegill is popular. A nearby Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries delayed-harvest trout stream allows anglers to fish for brown and rainbow trout. Swimming at the park's guarded beach and the "Critter Hole" play area are visitor favorites. The park has several hiking trails, including a connector trail to the 10.2-mile Carter Taylor Multi-use Trail for hikers, bicyclists and horseback riders. Visitors enjoy its campground, picnic shelters, playgrounds, seasonal concession stand, gift shop and boat ramp. The park rents canoes, kayaks and paddleboats. Holliday Lake is just minutes from the famous Appomattox Court House National Historical Park where Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant in 1865.

Laurel park site #1 is far from level both right to left and front to back. We used leveling blocks and was as far as you could be up on them and still wasn’t completely level. Our entry and steps are near the back and the 3 steps were 14” off the ground we had to build a fourth step to be able to get into the 22’-5”camper. We stayed the last week they were open so there wasn’t much going on.

This park is off the beaten path, but it is well worth a visit. It is conveniently located if you want to visit Appomattox Court House NHP. A very friendly Park Ranger was very helpful and checked in on campers often. The the site we were in was not very level but after a couple of boards and a slight repositioning we were level in no time. There is no cell service in the park with Verizon. Our trailer is 29' 3" from hitch to bumper and we tow it with a 1/2 ton pickup. There is a reason max length at this park is 30'.

Our in-state resident overnight rate was $35 + $5 reservation fee+ taxes. Out of state cost might be higher.

There are two campground loops. Laurel Ridge Campground is newer, with a new bathhouse and long, level, large private sites. There are only 7 sites in this loop and one may be taken by the camp host. The length limit is 40' per the website and these sites can easily accommodate that length and probably longer.

Redbud Campground is an older loop. There are more sites here. Most are unlevel and much smaller. These sites are best suited for tents and very small RVs. The exceptions would be sites 18, 19, and 20. These 3 sites are pull through and could accommodate an average size camper. They are not particularly level and are not private.

Some sites in 2021 are site specific for reservation and some you pick a site when you arrive. We were told and saw signs that in 2022 all sites will be site specific for reservation.

There is a shooting range in the area and we heard pops of gunfire all day during our stay on Saturday. (The state park is near a 4H Camp and State Forest.)

There is no cell service in the park.

Hiking trails were nice. The park has canoe, kayak, and paddle boat rentals for the lake. There is a swim beach, snack bar and picnic area that had a lot of day-use on Saturday.

As another reviewer mentioned the park is an easy drive to Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (where Robert E Lee surrendered to General Grant). Even though we are not huge history or Civil War buffs this was well worth the visit.

We would visit again for a short get-away to unplug and disconnect from phones.

We stayed in the older Red Bud loop. This loop is best for tents and small trailers. The day use areas and hiking trails were great. I should have read the reviews, then I would have booked in the newer loop....
We tried site 20 then moved to 12, neither were at all level. We gave up trying to level our 30ft class C.

We camped in the Laurel Ridge loop, site 2. This was back-in site. Site was clean. Restrooms & showers were clean. Wi-Fi was available at the sign-in booth and the camp store. We pull a 35' trailer w/ F450. Most sites in Laurel Ridge will accommodate us, however sites in Redbud I don't think would. Laurel Ridge sites are level whereas Redbud sites are not. Trails were in pretty good shape. This park is off the beaten path but worth a visit.
