“Photo Op in Amarillo, TX”
A giant piece of public folk art, featuring a pair of giant cut off legs.
I really enjoyed seeing this. I love seeing/visiting random objects in the middle of no where. There is a concrete plaque telling the background of the legs which caused us to look up more information on them online and there's actually a really cool and weird story behind them. It is right off the interstate so it was an easy stop and even though you can't get close because of the fence, the pictures still came out clear and you can tell what it is.
This was kind of a pain to find. Once we got there, we didn't get out, there was mud everywhere, the socks are now hot pink and covered with disgusting grafitti.
These are covered with graffiti now, total disappointment.
My son ranked it one of his favorite stops on our trip. Straight out of atlas obscura
For those not into 19th Century poetry or 20th Century comic books, this attraction is better known as Giant Legs, but as the plaque on site clearly explains, this randomly placed art exhibit is a nod to the classic Shelley poem about the impermanence of man-made legacies. If that doesn't make sense to you, just enjoy the broken statue in the pasture. Unlike nearby Cadillac Ranch, the gate to this exhibit is wired shut, so anybody looking to make their mark with spray paint will require some fence-hopping chutzpah.
Just off interstate but not easy on/off. Small dirt pull off for parking. No room for RVs you have to hug the edge of the offramp and partially block traffic. If you need a stop anyway to stretch your legs ... its ok. My wife and i felt silly but heh we got a selfie!
Not worth the stop! Not good location glass every where. Fence closed off.
Looks nothing like the picture. Spray painted blue and full of graffiti. Not worth the time.
There was glass and mud all over the side of the road where you have to park and the sign and actual legs are covered in graffiti. We were pretty disappointed. I wouldn't waste the time unless it gets cleaned up.
Fun little stop along the way. Yes, its covered in graffiti and a little bit off the highway but, if you are into kitschy and obscure photo ops it's worth it. Also, it's a great way to expose people to poetry as there is a plaque with Percy Bysshe Shelley's sonnet "Ozymandias" and little history about the monument itself. Had fun, spent less than ten minutes and got a cool/weird photo for our adventures photo album.
