I wasn't happy about going into a cigarette smoke-filled house to pay for our week of camping, but the $110 weekly rate made up for it.

There were 3 other campers here during our stay, everyone kept to themselves. We enjoyed long walks on the 18 mile bike trail that passes through the campground.

This is a basic campground, grassy sites with 20/30 amp electric and water fill at the Dump Station. There is a bathroom with showers but we didn't use them.

Not a destination but it's probably fun if you're here for an event at the fairgrounds.

We got over-the-air HDTV including CBS.

We came here to checkout the facilities for a possible rally. Very disappointing that the grounds are not maintained very well. Site 66 is along the river, the view is nice. Site is level, wish I would have brought my rake. Lots of goose and dog poop!

Go somewhere else to camp. I only camped here because the blues festival was held at the fairgrounds so in theory it was convenient. $30 per night for tent camping on a site where the power outlets didn't work, no picnic table (less than 1/4 of sites had a picnic table) and no fire ring (those seem to be scarce also). There is a dog rescue sort of operation right next to the campground. Between that and irresponsible campers bringing their dogs there is dog poop everywhere. I did not see a single camper walking their dog that carried a bag to clean up their dog's poop. And there is LOTS of barking. There is one source of water at the east end of the loop, but I didn't see it until just before I left because a camper was blocking my view of it. The restrooms by the campground have been padlocked since supposedly winter when some vehicle ran into it. Here we are 6 months or so later and it is still unavailable to use. There isn't even the common sense of posting a note on that building letting folks know to go over to the east side of the fairgrounds to use restrooms and showers. No campground facility map was given at all on check in, just a few pages of county park regulations that I had already read online. I would have been better off stealth camping behind some local business instead of spending $60 here.

Campground does not look like the pictures on the website. Those pictures must’ve been taken when it was brand new. Each pedestal serves to sites so if you’re on the wrong side of the pedestal you’ll have to have your electrical run underneath your trailer. The bathroom and showers are in terrible condition. My neighbor described it as what she envisioned a prison shower. Not far off power work reliably. There’s a bike path right behind the camper. We both around town. Bike around the lake. Grocery store/Walmart nearby. Fuel nearby. only about a mile from the center of town. Verizon cell service ok.

One of our biggest pleasant surprises this year was our trip exploring the Sunrise Coast of Michigan, it was so peaceful and beautiful, and exactly the right pace for us while writing The Mobile Internet Handbook. It was hard to pick amongst all of the great state parks we stayed at.. so we’re going with our most unique stay at the Alpena County Fairgrounds. We selected this site for the 4th of July weekend, as most other places were booked up. The campground itself isn’t much to look at, fairly typical of fairgrounds. We snagged a waterfront site, which overlooks a wildlife sanctuary. We had great views, access to fantastic kayaking and the hike & bike trail, easy access to a cute little town and were entertained all day long with swans landing in front of us.
