“over the jordan creek!”
A single-span multiple Kingpost with Burr arch truss 128' 4" over Jordan Creek. Located: On Lapp Road, just northwest of Allentown, South Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania. Directions: From the US-22 bypass (Cedar Crest Boulevard exit), go north on Cedar Crest Boulevard for 1.5 miles to Iron Bridge Road. Turn left on Iron Bridge Road for 0.8 mile to Lapp Road; turn right through the bridge. (There is a large parking area to the left of Lapp Road.) The World Guide of Covered Bridges lists the bridges name as Manassas with no alternate names. The Lehigh Valley tourist pamphlet Covered Bridges in the Lehigh Valley - lists the bridges name as Manasses Guth. Not only that, a sign on the bridges portal indicates it is the "Guth's Bridge." The truss system is comprised of double Burr arches sandwiching multiple Kingposts. The structure rests on stone and mortar abutments with long wing walls with concrete caps. The roadside wing walls are painted white. The sides are covered with faded barn red painted horizontal clapboard boarding and the portals are covered with barn red painted horizontal ship lapped boarding. The splash panels are wide vertical boarding and the interior is painted white and it is open under the eves for ventilation. The deck consists of wide lengthwise planking over crosswise planking, and it has a slate roof. Also known as the Manasses Guth Covered Bridge and the Guth's Covered Bridge. it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 1, 1980.
Kids loved it! Nice creek below and a large parking lot to park in for pictures.
Great place to visit to give you a sense of history. Easy parking is now open closed for long time after truck damaged inside rafters. Visit tbcbspa.com for information about Guths and all the covered bridges in Pennsylvania.
Bridge has been closed to traffic for some time, but still able to walk over it. I have driven over much worse bridges so I suspect it’s about finding the money to upgrade. It had a single Burr Arch Truss, not a double.
