“a remote haven for rock hounds & wildlife watchers”
Succor Creek State Natural Area lies in a deep, rocky canyon and is a remote haven for rock hounds and wildlife watchers. Limited souvenir collecting by rock hounds is permitted in the park. A rough 15 mile dirt road leads from Oregon 201 to the park, which has a walk-in primitive camping and day-use areas on the east side of the creek. You will find six primitive sites on the west side of the creek. No water is available. The Succor Creek Bridge in Succor Creek State Natural Area is open to pedestrians. The bridge is not open to vehicles or ATVs.
I have little doubt that Succor Creek Canyon would qualify as a National Park site were it located in New York or Massachusetts. The rhyolite domes rising our of the canyon are very spectacular. These combined with the high desert surounds and limited human traffic make for an unforgettable experience. Harve Waff, Professor Eneritus, Geological Sciences Dept., University of Oregon
