It was designed so that children could crawl inside through the eyes of the skull. "It's still a piece of art," said Jeff Salmon, Executive Director of Frontier Texas. "It's not exactly to the level of a piece of playground equipment so it's not exactly perfect for kids but we believe it is safe to climb through and climb out of. Make this a stop on your US 83 "road to nowhere" road trip. If this giant skull isn't an ominous reminder of how desolate this stretch of road is, I don't know what is.
Very nice! Located at the Frontier Texas Visitor's Center. Beautiful facility, bathrooms, a museum and travel brochures for the entire state and New Mexico. Lots if fun photo oops!
It’s a great brief stop, very quick fun photo op
Just so you know, this is actually in the yard of "Frontier Texas!" So if they're not open, you won't be able to get to it. We ended up going to the gift shop inside which was nice. The skull is exactly what you'd expect. It's made of painted metal and you can get inside of you want.
It was a fun stop, and right down the road from the disappointing World's Largest Paper Airplane. It's a cute photo-op and the buffalo windmill thingys are cool to look at as well. Kids can crawl around the inside too! We didn't do the tour inside the museum, but did look around the gift shop and talked to the people working (who were lovely.) Glad we stopped!
Photo op! It might not be a longhorn, but a picture posing with this roadside oddity will make for a great memento of your trip through the plains.
We came here at night so it was hard to see, but still fun as you can climb on top/through the skull. Great photo op! The street that it's on also houses a lot of other interesting looking buildings. I wish we had driven through here during the day.
If there is one thing you do in Abilene please visit. Great museum wish we had longer. Plan an hour and don't for get the photo by the skull outside.
This was really cool to stop and see!!
