“Almost 27 feet tall!”

Abilene Kansas is home to many an oddity, including the Museum of Independent Telephony, and the World's Largest Spur. Since the MIT didn't have an oversized receiver, we'll look at the World's Largest Spur here...  The giant metal spur acts as an entrance to the main horse ring at the Dickinson County Fairgrounds (home of the Central Kansas Free Fair and Rodeo). The graceful arching of the spur legs lead up to a spinning star shape, with hinged attachment-points (if you're a Paul Bunyan cowboy) at the bottom of the gateway. It's large enough for a semi to pass through, rising up approximately 27'.

We have family in Abilene and see this spur every year when attending the Abilene Fair & Rodeo. It serves as the entrance for the cowboys/girls to enter the arena. Didn't know it was the largest until looking it up on Roadtrippers. We'll see it tonight when we attend the rodeo again.

This was located in a pretty nice park, which was great for to stop and be able to walk or dog for a bit. The actual spur was smaller than I anticipated.

Don't go here! We stopped by and drove around forever looking for it and couldn't find it. We finally asked a local guy across the street and he said it was just taken down a week ago. The lady who owned it wanted it back. She owned a local boot store and might eventually be displaying it there, which is on Hwy 15. He did tell us to follow us on his Gator down the street and he showed us where it was sitting on a trailer. Bummer.

A little disappointed that the town that has the largest spur didn't have a placard or something giving details of the spur.
It was interesting in that it was really large.

A silly stop to get out and stretch. Makes for a fun pic, even if the kids groaned the whole time :)
