Virgin Falls State Natural Area

4

If you haven't noticed by now, Tennessee has abundant waterfalls and lots of great hiking. At Virgin Falls State Natural Area, you can combine both of those things, as the park features a stellar hike with multiple gorgeous waterfalls, caves, and waterways that's just a little over eight miles roundtrip. Explore the area, take a dip under the falls, and then walk the trail up some bluffs for additional views and a harder workout. Cool mists from the waterfalls are a refreshing reward throughout the trek, but definitely bring water and expect a solid day of activity. You will truly be roughing it, since this natural area does not offer amenities such as restrooms. So come prepared!

Burgess Falls State Park

Four waterfalls grace the strikingly beautiful Burgess Falls State Park. Burgess is a great day trip for anyone who enjoys getting outside and seeing incredible water landscapes. The park once belonged to various Native American tribes and later was used to create hydroelectric power, before it was protected by the state. The trek is a little bit strenuous, and you're sure to get a workout in, but the four waterfalls are a great reward for your hard work. Or, you can just take the quick trail to the main Burgess Falls; there are even stairs down to the base if you want to swim. Pictures don't come close to doing these falls justice, so get out there and experience them all in person!

Cummins Falls State Park

The short but tough hike to one of Tennessee's largest falls (it's 75 feet tall!) is well worth the climb through the rocks and river. Cummins Falls State Park spans over 200 acres, so there is plenty of room to spread out and breath in fresh air without feeling crowded. And photographers, trust us, you will be in HEAVEN! Cummins is a perfect stop for those traveling through the state, and is an easy stop on the way to or from Nashville. Take your time, stay cautious (if you climb down to the base of the falls, you'll be navigating using guide ropes), and most importantly, stop and appreciate all the beauty in this natural wonderland. You might even feel like hopping in and taking a dip-- it is one of America's top swimming holes, after all!

Cellar 53 Winery

It's about time for another winery stop, don't you think? Cellar 53 Winery is a unique, small-scale, family-run farm that welcomes you with a variety of wines that change on a monthly basis. For over a decade, the farm has grown wine grapes, and in 2015, the Paschal family opened their doors to the public. The family offers quality products using their own grape and blackberry vines, creating wines that you won't find anywhere but here. Live music and special events in the intimate and homey setting-- along with killer local cheese pairings-- present customers with a great time. Cellar 53 is open Thursday through Sunday until 6 PM, so plan accordingly.

The mountain views and fresh air of the Cumberland Mountains will have you wanting to experience as much as possible, and keep coming back for more! You can't beat the endless number of waterfalls you'll stumble upon, and you'll never be too far from the city, although it'll definitely feel like it. With interesting shops and wineries along the path to parks and preserves, this is a memorable road trip definitely worth your while.
