Most people think the idea of spending the night inside a train station sounds completely awful. Uncomfortable chairs, sticky floors, and weirdos as far as the eye can see. Well, Tennessee’s Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel might just change you mind...

Once known as the Terminal Station, the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel was a fully functioning railway terminal from 1908 until the early 70s. In its earliest incarnation it was the exquisite Stanton House, a luxurious five-story hotel for rich travelers passing through Chattanooga. For years, Stanton House was a hot-spot for both the local wealth, and those just passing through. Unfortunately the party had to end sometime, and eventually the once-grand hotel diminished, and was eventually demolished.

“The Terminal Station was erected in 1908, with its centerpiece - a magnificent dome - that rose majestically over the concourse. Built of steel and concrete and buttressed by huge brick arches, the dome rested on four steel supports 75 feet apart. Suspended from the ceiling were four brass chandeliers, each with 40 lights circling an 18-inch opal globe.” - Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel

Built where the Stanton House once stood, the Terminal “Gateway” Station, served 50 trains a day until traffic declined in the mid 60s, once cars and air travel became the way to get around. 61 years later, on August 11, 1970, the last train pulled out of the grand Terminal Station and its doors were finally closed. In 1972 the impressive building was bought and construction to rehabilitate the old 24-acre complex began.

Today guests can spend the night in a restored railway car, relax in the gardens which used to be the loading platform, and grab dinner inside an impeccably restored 1938 Class A dining car. You can even book one of the private Victorian Train Cars, and spend the weekend in the lap of early 1900s luxury… don’t worry, they have all the modern conveniences.
