“From Wreck to state of the art”
On 10 August 1628 Vasa set sail on her maiden voyage and sank in Stockholm harbor. The wreck was salvaged in 1961 and today Vasa is one of the world´s foremost tourist attractions.
If you ever wake up and find yourself in Stockholm Sweden, AND WANT TO VIST THE MOST AWESOME SHIPWRECK EVER, then head over to the Vasa Museum. The Swedes, whose ancestors were probably the most fearsome naval warriors ever, the Vikings, have proudly put on public display the result of their greatest maritime SNAFU. It's a 17 century war ship. Totally state of the art for the time. It had lots of guns. And gun decks. The problem was they were a bit over-ambitious about each. When they launched it, it immediately flipped over and sank. Whoops.
But the Swedes are not ones to dwell on their mistakes, but profit from them. They have turned this major fiasco into one of the best historical maritime museums you will ever visit (and I've been to more than a few).
Why is it awesome? This is not a replica! This is the real deal. From 1628! And it's preservation is amazing. And the story about it is really interesting. I can't recommend this museum enough. Go if you're passing through Stockholm.
