Evanston is a city in Illinois, north of Chicago, along the shores of Lake Michigan. Evanston has many identities: college town, dining destination, cultural center and gateway to the wealthy North Shore, although the city itself is anything but homogeneous in regards to economic status, culture and race.

  1. In 1939, Evanston hosted the first NCAA basketball championship final at Northwestern University's Patten Gymnasium.
  2. Evanston first received power in April 1893. Many people lined the streets on Emerson St. where the first appearance of street lights were lined and turned on.
  3. Tinker Toys was created by Charles H. Pajeau, Robert Pettit and Gordon Tinker in Evanston.
  4. Much of the 1984 film Sixteen Candles was filmed in and around Evanston, as was the 1993 film Dennis the Menace, and the 1997 film Home Alone 3.
  5. In the early 20th century Evanston was called "The City of Churches".
