“Chiricahua Apaches vs. the U.S. military”
Fort Bowie witnessed almost 25 years of conflict between the Chiricahua Apache and the US Army, and remains a tangible connection to the turbulent era of the late 1800s. Explore the history of Fort Bowie and Apache Pass as you hike to the visitor center and old fort ruins. Today, this peaceful landscape stands in stark contrast to the violence that once gripped this land.
This is a 25 minute drive off the I-10. Really easy to find, good signage. You do have to drive on a dirt road for about a mile but it is nice and maintained.
The park ranger, Michael Dozie, did an amazing job at explaining everything to us. The fort is set on a beautiful landscape. If you have some time, stop by and take in this amazing historical site.
The parking for the fort is iffy for RV's. I had a tow vehicle and had to unhook to turn around. The fort is a mile and half hike one way but well worth it. The park has labeled plants, Pony express route, stage coach route, and many other items of interest. Be sure to take water with you on the hike.
