Historic Treasure

Our Take

The main site is the Civil War battlefield itself. There are monuments from every state to commemorate the dead. You can easily drive through, but there are lots of places to stop, get out, and look around. There is definitely a feeling of eeriness, almost as if you can sense the presence of the souls who lost their lives fighting here. The visitor center can help if you are trying to determine if a family member might have died at Vicksburg. This is a must-see for history buffs, but since everyone could stand to learn more about our country’s history, it really should be a stop for anyone.

“A grim reminder of the Civil War”

Vicksburg National Cemetery embraces 116 acres, and holds the remains of 17,000 Civil War Union soldiers, a number unmatched by any other national cemetery. Covering ground once manned by the extreme right of Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's XV Army Corps during the siege of Vicksburg, it was established by an act of Congress in 1866, and serves as the final resting place for United States soldiers who gallantly served this country in times of national and international conflict.

The Vicksburg park was great! We noticed at the visitor center that tours were available, but unsure if it would be worth the expense we went ahead watched the intro video and found that to be very informative which pushed me toward the personal tour guide. 20$ an hour turned out to be a deal! They called our guide who said he could be there in 15min and showed up right on time. Robert Terry was his name and was a wealth of knowledge that captivated my 13&10yr old boys. If you have the chance it is a must do!

Impressive and melancholy place. If, like us, you're not very familiar with the area's history, check out the video in the visitor's centre to get an understanding of the siege before you drive around the grounds. Pretty amazing to see how the landscape was physically altered by the war. The iron-clad river gunboat USS Cairo, which was raised from the Yazoo River in recent decades and reconstructed in the park, is a particularly dramatic sight.

My daughter (10) and I enjoyed the drive through with the audio tour via phone. For kids younger than 10, it's likely going to be too boring to listen so make sure you explain the "Blue" vs the "Red" army and why they were fighting. For me, someone born & raised in Europe, who only has a minor understanding of the US Civil War, it's eye-opening. We went through the park in about 1.5 hours at a quick pace.

Vicksburg National Military Park gives a very good impression on one of the key battles of the Civil War. While driving the tour, one can get information by phone entering waypoint numbers. The description in combination with the landscape, gives a good impression how it must have been during the battle. It is incredible to see how close both parties have been during the fights.
When you are visiting this area you must see this place. Please reserve minimum 3 hours to take the tour.

Be prepared Vicksburg is a big park and the terrain is very rough (why the siege lasted so long). Plan several hours for the stop. We stopped on our way back north from New Orleans. Unfortunately Confederate Ave is closed due to road problems which means to see the whole park you have to double back on parts you've already seen. To complete the Jr Ranger book you have to drive the entire park. It took us about 3 hours to see everything and help the kids answer all the questions. Video at the Visitors' Center is very good. Second Visitors' Center at The Cairo is worth checking out as well.
