“a roadside icon!”
For nearly 40 years Cool Springs Camp was all but a forgotten memory. All that remained of the once thriving establishment was a crumbling stone foundation along a lonely remaining stretch of Route 66. In its heyday, Cool Springs was a beacon of light offering cabins, home cooked meals, and most importantly fresh water and gasoline as travelers faced the challenges of 100+ desert temperatures and the climb through Black Mountain. Community: Cool Springs Visitor Service, but no fuel or lodging available All but Forgotten! In 1997 Ned Leuchtner passed Cool Springs and fell in love with the beauty, history and majesty of the areas and the Cool Springs ruins, and set out to buy the property. .It took four years for the property owner to sell to Ned, but in 2001 the doors opened to the rebirth of the special place. It took 39 years to have the lights beaming once again from the property. Today Cool Springs, located about 20 miles west of Kingman on the Oatman Highway (Route 66) just before the road climbs into the Black Mountains up to Sitgreaves Pass, is still a work in progress, but so worth the stop. Cool Springs, and the beauty around it, makes it a perfect place to stretch your legs, enjoy a snack, tour the Route 66 museum, and browse the expansive gift shop. The vistas along this stretch of Route 66 are one of the most unique to be found anywhere!
Reviews
Cool Springs functions as a basic gift shop surrounded by scenic views. Buy from snacks and drinks from the store and enjoy them on the patio. There are no services between Fort Mojave / Needles and Kingman so top off your gas before heading out here. Also, if you're squeamish about narrow windy roads, the road from Oatman might not be your best bet. Lollipops get from Kingman is more or less a straight shot.
It's on Old Route 66 which is a little further off the beaten path but it's worth it to check this place out. Ned has put his heart and soul into rebuilding this place, and it's such a nice tribute to everything that makes Route 66 amazing. Be prepared for some steep roads and hairpin switchbacks ahead!
This place is great! Myself and son found this place by accident and were thrilled that we did. The chap we spoke to gave us a full history of the both the station and the area.
Make this a stop on your road trip. You will be glad you did ;-).
Pretty cool stop along the way to oatman.
Stop by and see Crazy Ray! Awesome place to see with a lot of history.
Take a picture at the station and with the rt66 sign on the road!
Kinda a weird little stop. Beautiful views and if you like the movie Cars by Pixar go ahead and add the stop, but if not meh.
Update - Cool Springs is being run by a different person. Not as fun as it used to be but still worth the stop. Note that they don't currently accept credit card transactions.
it's not a gas station, its a landmark. it's still got the old pumps outside (they don't work, but they're kept in great shape), and they sell route 66 and Cool Springs trinkets and cold sodas inside. The guy running the shop was away this month, but i spoke to his friend, who was really nice.
