Then hop on the free bus to Steamboat Springs, just 3 miles south. A true Western ranching town, Steamboat Springs charms with unique galleries and shows, dining and even a pioneer museum. Get a taste of local culture at the many festivals, including the Hot Air Balloon Rodeo, Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup and Winter Carnival. We camped riverside in a 'tent' site in our VW bus. Right on the river and plenty of firewood laying around. Open year-round, and convenient to the slopes for cheap skiers like us. The city bus comes through the entrance every half hour or so and will get you to town and the slopes. Strawberry hot springs is close by and a fun side-trip.

The same folks that own the KOA in Custer, SD (super resort) purchased the campground last year. Significant improvements and further planned improvements in store. Bathrooms have been totally redone. Grounds, pool and overall facilities are excellent.

While it is next to the highway I didn't hear anyone in our group of 38 Airstreams mention anything about highway noise from US40.

Mix of pull thru, back ins, primitive sites over the bridge to the south. Some parking on grass even with hookups. Everything worked fine.

Verizon was 3 bars LTE 11.38/1.55 mbps down/up

All hook-up sites start in the $50 range for summer and full hook-ups are upper $50s. It's a run down KOA with an old 70's pool, close together sites, cable hookups on the wrong side, road noise, and TENGO internet. If it was $40 I would say it's worth it and give it 3 or 4 stars but I don't get how these KOAs justify the high prices in addition to charging you additional for kids.

On the plus side the staff is really friendly which was not the case at the Craig KOA where we stopped first.

Also, as you drive in there are about 20 campers lined up in storage which is an eye sore and for some reason it smelled really bad by our camper. It was not from the sewer either it was almost like burning rubber (maybe there is some industrial work going on nearby).

Cell service also bounced a lot for us going between 4G, 3G and 1x. The booster helped with that.

Stayed for 10 days a couple different times.
Great staff, but the place is rundown.
The property is old and the infrastructure is failing.
Sites are tight and some of the sewer hook-ups are kind of jacked.
The place has a little sketch in the early spring.

Steamboat is a gem of a mountain town.
Off the hook hiking, kayaking, skiing and mountain biking.
Everything is more expensive up there.

We stayed here a few nights in early October 2017. We had electric and water hookup, both of which worked great. We also enjoyed having cable TV hook up here so that we could enjoy college football! The facilities here were very nice - very clean showers, restrooms & laundry rooms. Our kids loved the playground, giant chess/checkerboard and mini golf. There is a nice bike path into downtown Steamboat that is not far from the park entrance - a bit of road riding is required to reach it though.

Stayed 5 days to finish up the 2018 ski season. We stayed at site 61 which is a very convenient site to pull into (pull through site), just not out of. You pull directly forward from check in, but our 40' rig was tight to turn out. The staff worked extremely hard to get our site ready for us with the crazy Colorado warm/cold season upon us. During our stay the weather turned warm and began to rain and flooded the site. The staff was very accommodating in laying pallets and creating a wooden walkway for my family not to tromp through the mud. Full hook ups in the winter are hard to find in Colorado and it was nice to get back from skiing and everyone be able to take a hot shower. You have some nice private access to the Yampa river for fishing and incredible views from the camp site. Less than a 1/4 mile towards town in a great little bowling alley that our kids enjoyed. The ski bus picks up every 10 minutes and takes about 20 minutes to get to the gondola station. Best part it is the bus is free!

Pros:
Location....close to town, on the Yampa River, shuttle every 30 mins
Stuff to do....pool, mini-golf, playground, rent 3-wheelers
Delivery Service....firewood, s'more fixin's
Small store with basic goods
Wifi (sluggish) laundry, clean bathrooms
Small, fenced dag park

Cons:
Nightly fee was on the steep side IMO
Sites close together
EVERYTHING was an extra charge
While the bathrooms/showers were clean there are not enough of them. Only 4 toilets in the main building.....but 5 showers??? I believe there were a couple pit toilets on the tent side of the river but that was for 91 sites!! If you figure at least 2-3 people per tent, it was pretty lame. Worst of all was on a Saturday afternoon @ 4:15 when folks are getting ready for dinner, they decided to clean the bathrooms AND showers! The line got VERY long as folks waited 30+ mins! Couldn't even use a sink......bad planning on their part.

We arrived to Steamboat Springs with no reservation. KOA said they'd open boondocking area at 2PM, so when we showed up we were lucky to find out they had a full hookup site just become available, so we snagged it. We loved Steamboat Springs so much we stayed a second night, but moved to a river site that opened up. The river site is where it's at! We had fun looking for crawdads and watching fishermen and kayakers come down the river.

The city has a free bus that stops at KOA and takes you straight into town - it's AWESOME and clean and definitely utilize it while you're there. Storm Peak Brewing in town is dog friendly inside & out in case you're traveling with furry friends. Free minigolf at the campground, too! Lots of employees keep the grounds very clean and are quite helpful with anything you need. It's a very well-oiled machine there. Would absolutely go back. Couldn't get the wifi to work but there was so much to do I wasn't too worried about it. They offer a military discount that saves 10%, too!

Wifi: Verizon - 5.4 down, 3.8 up / ATT - 11.5 down, 4.6 up
Cost: $49/night
Noise: Minimal, but Ron was snoring so maybe more.

The Steamboat Springs KOA is on the outskirts of the aforementioned city, right along a gorgeous river. As with every KOA we have stayed at, the hosts were friendly and helpful, and the site was just fine (a pull through at the end of a street). At a 5 minute ride to downtown, everything you needed was readily available to you (they even had a bus that went downtown!) while you still felt a little in the wilderness. The only downside (aside from the atrociously slow wifi) was that the bath houses were tiny. For a giant campground, they only had one facility. There were maybe 5 each of showers and bathroom stalls per gender. We never ran into an issue of overcrowding or not being able to use the facilities when we wanted, but that could easily be an issue if they were at full capacity.

Rating: I’d go back!

We loved Steamboat Springs and the KOA has several amenities that make it a worthwhile choice. Sites are typical of most KOA/private RV parks with a mix of FHU, W/E only and primitive. We were in a water/30 amp electric site which put us a little closer to the river but it still ran $49/night. Each site had a picnic table and fire ring. Bathrooms and showers are on a security code, we didn’t use either so I can’t comment. We did use the laundry, 4 washers/6 dryers and everything was clean and working.

There is a huge primitive camping area across the bridge with 40 sites. The brochure says these are tent sites, but we did see some small RV’s parked in that area.

I really liked the shuttle service to town from the campground. The bus runs from around 7am to 11pm so keep that in mind if you choose a site near the pick-up area. The lovely Yampa River runs right through the campground and there are places where puppy boy could access the water and have some play time. There’s a small, fenced off-leash dog area too. The camp store was a cut above many I’ve visited with a nice mix of food, gifts, and RV accessories. Free mini-golf course too! Staff were friendly and overall did an excellent job keeping the campground clean and well maintained.

Note: call ahead if you are traveling with pets as they do have breed restrictions.

We enjoyed Steamboat Springs, a nice town to walkabout and we biked the Yampa River Trail. Don’t miss the brews at Storm Peak Brewing Company which is dog-friendly!

We had 3 bars of Verizon 4G.
