Natural Wonder

Our Take

Yellowstone has been a road trip staple for a hundred years for the same reason it was made our first National Park… because it’s so wild. Old Faithful and the other classic attractions are popular because they're genuinely worth seeing. And if you want to get a break from the crowds, the park is actually quite large and there is tons of room to spread out. Just be careful if you’re planning a picnic, a lot of the animals here aren’t afraid of humans.

Where do I even begin! I travelled here for 2 weeks and absolutely had to come back for another trip because I loved it so much!

First off there is wildlife.. EVERYWHERE! So many Bison in the park and your guarantee'd to see a vast array of other wildlife while adventuring the park!

The classic ol faithful is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to geological wonders in this park. My favourite spot in the entire park (excluding the cliff jumping into hot spring water!) was the Grand Prismatic Spring! Take the hike up the hill behind the springs so you can see the insane orange colors!

There are tons of other geysers that go off periodically and can shoot way into the air or deep boiling pools of hot spring water! Oh and Mammoth falls will absolutely blow your mind!

Did I mention that it is absolutely massive! Yellowstone Natl Park includes a huge lake, rainbow covered waterfall, hot springs, geysers and even cliff jumping into hot spring water!

Anyways I have to stop writing this review cause I'm already planning my next trip here in the back of my mind :)

just spent almost a week in yellowstone. it was great and all the rangers seemed really knowledgeable and awesome. please be a respectful camper and a smart driver and for gods sake don't be stupid around wild animals. i actually saw people circle around a bear with their children to take photos. they are wild animals and should be admired from a very safe distance. if you do not believe me, get the book in their giftshop called Death in Yellowstone. Darwin, I swear.

Yellowstone is pretty amazing. I did an RV trip with my family which was pretty cool, gave us a good way to cart around supplies for a week and we stayed at camp grounds along the way. We all felt it was limiting though, as you have to stay at camp grounds with dump sites and hook-ups and all that jazz. If I were to do it again I would take a small car that I could park somewhere, leave it and hike up into the mountains for a few days to get some back-country and camp. The hiking you can access that way I've heard is totally stellar compared to the dinky little trails you get to hike if you have to make your way back to a campground with an RV.

That being said, we still saw some AMAZING stuff in Yellowstone. Massive herds of buffalo and some great close-ups of single ones just moseying down the street. The top 3 highlights for me were the lower falls at Yellowstone Falls (it's an easy hike to the upper falls from there but the lower falls are really the stunning views). Mammoth Hot Springs were really cool because they are just these crazy, terraced landscapes that you've likely never seen. Last but not least, the Norris Geyser Basin is stunning, we happened to go just before sunset and seeing those pools glowing light blue with the sun going down...really surreal.

I highly recommend reading about the park's geology here - it's really what makes Yellowstone such an amazing place: http://www.secretyellowstone.com/historical-cultural-scientific/geology

One last thing, don't forget to look up at the sky once it gets dark because the number of stars you see will blow your mind.

First trip was in 1979, I was 12. Thought it was amazing! Took my son there for his first trip in 2008 and he thought it was amazing! Ol Faithful still going strong (not as strong as in '79) Mammoth falls was a bit disappointing as it is all dried up now. (in '79 they were filled with springs and flowing and had beautiful colors). But still love visiting there and hope my children bring their children there.

A beautiful, unique park with lots of places to go. Keep in mind that if you want to see them all you will be driving a LOT. This is not a small park by any means, and you can usually (in the summer) expect lots of traffic and tourists. Check out Hot springs, geysers, waterfalls, a canyon, and much more. Some must see destinations are Grand Prismatic Springs, Mammoth Hot Springs, Old Faithful, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone (particularly Artist Point and Uncle Tom's Trail), and Lamar Valley (lamar valley contains lots of wild life).
While you are here, PLEASE be smart around Wildlife. It is WILD, not tame. You will see tons of people getting close to bison, bears, elk, etc. Do NOT do this, as you will be hurt.

Yellowstone is definitely worth a visit if you have never been here. If you have, it's nice to drop in every 5 or so years.

There is also lots of back-country hiking, but if you are going to do this bring bear-spray.

Wonderful bucket list place! Very overwhelming place, not a quick stop! 3 days minimum to see some of the park. For Old Faithful, it took us an hour to park - no joke. It was worth it, but try to see it early morning or late afternoon. We did not see any animals through the day, they all came out in the late afternoon. We hope to make it back in our lifetime.

At first I never quite understood what made Yellowstone THE American national park. But after visiting with my family I understood--it's an astounding space filled with so many incredible places, from the classics like Ol Faithful and the buffalo to its numerous hot springs, waterfalls, and lakes.

Definitely plan on spending at least one night in the park itself. There are so many different places to stay, camping, or in a historic lodge. The Old Faithful Inn is one of the world's largest log buildings, there's also Lake Yellowstone Hotel. One minor caveat: Don't expect a good internet or phone signal. It's au-naturale here.

Fantastic park. Not like any other. Have your camera ready with a fully charged battery and empty SD card. Steaming (literally) with wildlife at every turn. Keep your distance! An all time favorite picture I have is a bison grazing near the boardwalk to the mud pools. He stopped all of us dead in our tracks. Great background for the picture of such a majestic animal. Have to spend a fee days. Must make reservations. Don't be put off by the sulfur smell. Piggyback this park with Grand Teton.
