Great area! We camped squeezed our 21ft RV through the tightest of places...barely. Needles highway was great! We camped and swam at lake Sylvan, hiked and camped through the French Creek Natural Area...lot's of crossing the same stream; we crossed it 31 times from the west trailhead to Fishermans Flats. It's absolutely beautiful down there, we didn't see any hikers in 2 days, and only a handful of horseback riders, but this is a very tough hike as the trail is not very well signed along the way regarding distances. Camping is dispersed, just have to follow the rules regarding site placement.
Wide open spaces your thing? This is a must stop. Find an access road (lots of them along the way) and drive in and find a spot to call home. (follow the rules of course)
We spent one night near one of the ponds, parked our RV and walked in a ways farther, saw a mother whitetail with her fawn and various waterfowl. Amazing sunset and view of the stars!
Here's a tip: don't leave the windows of your vehicle open in early August; moths. Lots of them had inhabited our RV through the night.
Had a great time biking around with my wife, lots of great photo opportunities! Mind the wind direction, as there is a waste water treatment plant and a Morrels Meat packing plant nearby.
