You can poke around the garage free of charge. Very friendly people -- the owner even came into the garage while we were looking around took five minutes to teach my son the finer points of engine-placement in cars. A very cool car collection and a nice gift shop. I'm glad we stopped -- my kids really liked it, and so did I.

A nice stop. There are lots of little informational stops where recorded voices tell you about the foliage and vegetation. Tons of ducks and swans. Our time was cut short by a thunderstorm but I was impressed at how nice the place was. Free of charge as well, if you want to just wander around the lake.

Tried to stop by on a Friday just after lunchtime. A guy in the parking lot who was just coming down from the springs said there were a few nudies up there. So I opted not to take my kids up. Kind of bummed we missed seeing it, but do beware that this place is evidently still occasionally clothing-optional.

The guy behind the counter at a nearby gas station agreed, noting that they sometimes have problems at the springs with people who "don't respect other people or the land," though he was quick to point out that there are no problems with most visitors.

About 45 minutes south of Farmington. We camped a couple miles off the highway on the side of a dirt road. I'm not sure if we were in the "park" or not, but we really enjoyed hiking around the interesting gullies and hills the next morning. Very, very quiet out here and really otherworldly. I would come back and make a day of it, but not during the summer. By 8:30 or 9 a.m. in early September it was getting a little toasty.

I kind of thought the tower would be part of some type of town square or something. Nope. It's just kind of standing there near the parking lot of a small, local university. It was fun for a quick stop -- my kids really enjoyed swinging on the bars even though the signs say not to -- but I wouldn't make it a destination.

Make sure you allow a couple two or three hours. We were rushed because we'd planned something else afterward -- we had a little over an hour, which was enough time to take the tour of the house and not much else. We missed the slave quarters self-guided tour and didn't have time to just wander the grounds. Don't make the same mistake.

The tour kept my kids, aged 11, 9, and 7, interested almost the whole time. Very cool place.

Went on a Saturday morning in early September. It was pretty crowded, nothing like the quiet picture you see above. There are signs everywhere politely asking people not to climb on or touch the tree, which is fair, but it does kind of distract from the aesthetics. In addition, there were several large boards propping up large branches, which, again, is probably helpful to keep the tree healthy but does make it less picturesque. A quieter time probably would've improved my experience. As it was, we snapped some pictures of the admittedly stunning tree (all of which pictures had a bunch of tourists in them), stayed for 20 minutes, then left. Worth the stop, as it's not far from Charleston, but would be better at some off-season time.

The beach was nice. There's a small entrance fee to get into the park, and don't forget to stop at the visitor's center. And when you do, see if you can spot the alligator that lives in the pond just outside the building.

Not as isolated as I thought. It's right along a small highway, which is relatively quiet but certainly not isolated. There's a church across the street. Houses dot the side of the highway.

The ruins are nice though, what with the Spanish moss and all. Not far off the beaten path. An easy stop for a few minutes and few pictures.
