so glad we found this awesome side road. drove through late march '18. its a completely dirt and gravel road with lots of rocks and bumps and some tight turns, so for those that are worried about the condition of your car, this might not be the detour for you..
it was completely dry for my drive, but it definitely looks like there are dips and ditches and washes that would have water if rain falls. also, wet or dry, your car WILL get very dirty. would also recommend 4 wheel drive, but i did see some regular sedans types and there are lots of rv's and third wheels camping along the trail. most of the road is only one car wide, so its a good idea to pay attention to drivers traveling the opposite direction and making sure your in a good spot to pass by one another.
just like most of the rest of utah, the views are spectacular. but here there is a different perspective, and more of a feeling of solitude.
with many stops to take in the scenery and walk around a bit, this 17 mile road took up almost 2 hours of our time, but was well worth it..

stopped off here for a quick picnic lunch. very peaceful and serene. not too many people (late march). there is camping and boating on the river as well.
just stopping by to check out the petroglyphs is worth the short detour off the highway.
