This is one of my favorite places in the United States! I have a friend who had been here a couple of times and RAVED about it. We went in July 2017 (finally getting around to writing the review!). We took one of the private tours with a guide, which is not cheap - but very worth it! We learned so much about the horses, as well as the Native American legacy in the area, the annual Sun Dance that occurs there, the petroglyphs, and more. Our guide knows the horses well and we got out of the vehicle several times and interacted, including "hugging" the horses! The history of the sanctuary and the incredible work the founder has done to save and nurture these beautiful creatures is fascinating! Know its dusty and HOT - even in the "air-conditioned" SUV for the private tour. There is a less expensive bus tour that doesn't give you the same access to the horses up close and personal. A highlight of our trip! Will go back as soon as possible!

We found rooms here to check into immediately after we bailed on our rooms at the LaCrosse Days Inn - which was filthy and the manager yelled and swore at my son when he politely told them we wanted a refund because of the quality of the rooms. The folks at Grandstay were awesome! The place is spotless, new facility, rooms are like suites with full sized fridges, cooktop, dishwasher, etc. Very reasonable price! Tiny pool, swing set in backyard, walking to international themed gardens by the river. We have two rooms, one for parents with two small boys, and one for my husband & me, and my sister. The free breakfast is ok, not great, but adequate.
A wonderful find!

Very sweet little hotel and spa. Each room is decorated differently like a bed & breakfast. Ours had 2 queen beds - for 3 of us traveling together. Their website says they don't have an elevator but they do - it's old-timey with doors you manually close.
Two of us used the spa - which is included in the guest rate - the hot sand room and the hot tub with mineral water. Usual to try in hot weathered July, but they felt good. You lay down in your swimsuit on a towel laid over the canvas covered hot sand. It just soaks into your body. It would be especially great in the winter, but followed by a cool shower it was refreshing even in July. We didn't eat there because it was the July 4th holiday and their restaurant wasn't open. Plenty of options in and around town.
Julie and Joe, your hosts were very friendly. Cute little town. We wished we could have spent more time there.

FYI... When you book from the LaQuinta website it takes you to Booking.com. If you want to book directly you have to call the hotel site. Based on the information online I thought I was booking a room with 2 beds and an fridge. Our room did not have the fridge. For a 4 night stay, trying to get an room change to what we needed... everyday I spoke to a staff member who seemed helpful, but the next day I would find a critical piece of information that person hadn't told me, or that another staff member had gone into their system and had undone a new reservation that the previous person had made for us. We never did get the correct room. And we threw away quite a few perishable food items from our roadtrip cooler that we couldn't preserve. There are lots of negative reviews on TripAdvisor about this place. It is prudent to pay attention to them.
The building is very old and worn. It is an old style Motel - even though it doesn't show that on the web images - you park outside your door or walk up the outside stairs and walk along the outside hallway to your room. Our room was clean enough and some staff were very helpful and friendly, especially Tracy, and a guy named Cross, who ultimately knocked off some of our charges and apologized for the frustrations. Small outdoor pool is separate from the building, in a fenced area across the parking lot.
Location is very convenient to Cherry Creek area, Wash Park and south Denver areas.

This is a wonderful little spot along the road to the Black Hills Wild Mustang Sanctuary. It is incorrectly placed on Roadtrippers maps. Looks like a parking lot and a few picnic tables, but a short walk down the path, and a few stairs down and you are at the loveliest natural swimming spot! Cool water, safe and fun for all ages and abilities.

Cute little retro spot for twisty soft serve cones (and plenty of food) with a drive thru window. Just had ice cream cones, no other food. They had black cherry and vanilla twists as the special today. The cherry was VERY mild flavored. A friendly local woman came in and ordered one of their special twists with a spiral of flavored syrup on the outside edge of the twisted vanilla. She got butterscotch - there were at least 6 options. She said it was great.

Very clean and new. We just slept here, but there were people out in the patio with a bonfire feature enjoying the night when we arrived on Saturday evening. Quiet.

Persevere when you are finding this place. It is behind and below the big grain elevator at the end of the main street of Lanesboro. Very very casual, order up window, side dishes (3-4 cold salads and two hot sides) are buffet style in the small dining room. All were good. We had pulled pork which was good, not exciting. I tasted the pastrami which was very good except I am super sensitive to hot spices and it had too much black pepper for me. My husband liked his chicken. The one bbq sauce they have was pretty spicy - with horseradish, I think.

Delicious food. Good variety on the menu. Large inside space, with large sidewalk seating as well. Excellent service; the manager came right over when there seemed to be one thing wrong with our food.
