The petroglyphs were easily found under a shelter in a small parking lot. The carvings themselves were amazing and we delighted in brainstorming just what the depictions were of, what they meant, and why they were carved by the natives so long ago. It's an excellent piece of history. HOWEVER, the stone that the petroglyphs was carved in was also covered in other carvings and spray painted junk graffiti by vandals. The rock was under a great deal of cigarette butts and other trash. This place needs to be better protected and maintained in order to preserve these ancient artifacts. Whoever thought a wooden railing would be adequate should not be in charge of historical relics.
Its not a particularly huge statue and it doesn't seem to exactly follow witness accounts of what Mothman was reported to look like, but a fun and eccentric statue nonetheless.
The road off the interstate was quite curvy, making this little side destination take much longer than expected. The final road leading up to the place was an EXTREMELY narrow old road full of pot holes with thorny underbrush encroaching from both sides. A mere .2 miles from the ghost town we were forced to stop due to the condition of the road. There was a puddle of undermined depth covering the road. We jumped out to investigate and became certain that the road was washed out under the water. Because we were so tantalizingly close but could not see the ghost town, I decided to traverse the remaining distance on foot, but made it only twenty feet before I stepped on the driest bit of ground available only to find mud up to my ankle, trying to suck my running shoe off like a toothless veteran of prostitution. I returned to the car and we were forced to reverse the quarter mile back to the county road, brambles scraping our rental car all the while. The kicker? A couple on a four wheeler was waiting for us to get off the road (too narrow for them to get past us), so we stopped to ask about McVey. They told us THERE IS NO SUCH PLACE. At the end of the road is nothing more than a few dirt hills and a pile of rubble. Whatever your views of the paranormal, this "ghost" town definitely does not exist .
