Beautiful mid-century modern interiors and, most importantly, a spectacular view from every room across the beach and Santa Cruz's famous wharf. Crack open your balcony windows for the sound of the sea. In season you can see whales, sea lions and otters right from your room.

Only about five minutes walk from the Boardwalk, and right on the sand. The building used to be a motel, and looks a bit...concretey from outside, but the work done to turn it into a boutique hotel has been incredibly successful, so the inside is really charming. Decent food (although you're probably best off going downtown - there are some great restaurants in Santa Cruz).

This is a minimal service hotel, so don't expect butlers, a spa, a gym etc. But the position, the wonderful sound of the sea and the lovely styling is all you could hope for: it's a regular stop for me when I'm in the area.

The restaurant is terrific. The cabins have a magnificent view - but they're tired, the beds are old and uncomfortable, and they're not as clean as they could or should be.

I've been lucky enough to stay here twice: heaven. Service (unsurprisingly - it's a Four Seasons) and comfort are out of this world; but what makes it best for me is the way it's set in a coastal botanical garden, full of specimen plants which have been there for a hundred years. Historic building, glorious sea views, Four Seasons style: what's not to like?
