Have baby, will travel! Family of three always on the go for the next big adventure! We travel for the scenery, food, and history. We have a goal of visiting all of the National Parks, Monuments, Memorials, and Recreation Areas in the country as a couple.

This was one of the top stops of our vacation to Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico. We climbed to the top of the highest peak one morning and arrived just as the sun came over the horizon. We were the only ones there and the views were just amazing. Worth all the effort. We also stayed at the campgrounds which were very well maintained and spaced beautifully.

Definitely the largest petrified trees I have ever seen. It is a bit out of the way, but worth a stop if you are in the area.

Gorgeous! And free! Did I mention this was free? The original proprietor of the land passed this along to the state's control. When he did so, he stipulated that it must ALWAYS be free to enter. This park is beautifully maintained, it has many different trail lengths and difficulties, and the parking is too easy. Make sure you stop into the brand new visitor's center for lots of really great, interactive exhibits. The red rocks are some of the most beautiful in Colorado.

Excellent hiking opportunities here with 20+ miles of well maintained trails running through the battlefields. Be warned that the park gates close at 6PM, so make sure you make it back in time to leave. Some great earthworks are still present in the southern part of the park. The hike to the top of Mount Kennesaw is a short 0.8 miles from the visitors center and is worth the effort in sweeping views of downtown Atlanta.

Make sure you watch the introductory video in the Theater (we normally skip these, but this one was VERY well done and crucial to really understanding what happened here). This ranks somewhere in the top three of "most depressing national monuments" we have been to, but it is incredibly informative. The visitor's center is dedicated as a POW/MIA center that looks at POW throughout American history. Very moving. I cried. Really makes you think about and question what we are currently doing with Guantanamo Bay. Stop in and stay a while.

It's beautiful. That's about it. It is also expensive at $10/adult for entry. The visitors center and museum were really lackluster and uninformative. Even the pamphlet was boring and long winded. Come for the beauty, enjoy the trees, and head on out. FYI, closed on Mondays.

One of the most impressive American forts we have been in. Despite it's relative "lack" of history like other forts such as McHenry, the construction and overall design is incredibly impressive. Worth a stop if you are in the area.

We bopped in for just one night of tent camping. Standard state park with close campgrounds row by row, despite this, we were pretty far from our neighbor with nice foliage between sites. It was a Saturday night and VERY quiet. Bathrooms/showers were updated, clean, but poor design and little place to set your dry items. Campsites were very clean and we had no issues with insects or animals. Would definitely stay here again. All Georgia State Parks are pretty expensive at $30/night for tent sites.

We did some back country camping on the island for just one night. The ferry was a relatively inexpensive at $20/person round trip. It was $4 for a back country camping permit. There is also a first-come-first-serve bike rental on the island ($16/day or $20/overnight rental). The island itself is beautiful, every trail and road is lined with Spanish moss covered oak trees. The back country site was well cleared and clean. We saw wild horses, deer, WILD HOGS, armadillos, raccoons, and many varieties of birds (including owls and woodpeckers!). The ruins and historic homes on the islands offer excellent tours and break from hiking and the outdoors. Despite the rain, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Be prepared for trails that have lots of mud and standing water!
