“Stay in a cozy cabin on the slopes of an active volcano and enjoy year-round outdoor pursuits on the mountainous terrain.”

Situated on the northern slopes of Mount Ruapehu, one of New Zealand’s most active volcanos is the resort of Iwikau Village. After a day of hiking, skiing or snowboarding the famed volcanic landscape, retreat to a warm lodge and soak in a bath.

Set out from your base in the village to explore Tongariro National Park. Hike through the geothermal wilderness by taking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It passes through a volcanic terrain of old lava flows and craters. Walk through Mangatepopo Valley to the active Red Crater to see the steaming vents. Trek over craggy mountainous fields to the stunning Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake. There are also numerous short walks through the area as well as mountain bike tracks.

Take part in other outdoor adventures at the park, including kayaking, whitewater rafting and fishing.

Tongariro National Park is of great cultural significance to Maori people. When you get back to your cabin in Iwikau Village look at its name. Each accommodation is named after a Maori Tuwharetoa chief.

During the winter, race down the ski slopes of Mount Ruapehu. The two largest ski fields here are Whakapapa on the north-western slopes and Turoa, on the south-western side. Beginners can start on the gentle slopes at Happy Valley before graduating to the intermediate slopes. Expert skiers can get the heart pumping at one of the thrilling black and black diamond runs.

Iwikau Village is situated on Mount Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park, in the central part of New Zealand’s North Island. Arrive by bus or car from either Auckland or Wellington, both are approximately a 4-hour drive away. Alternatively, you can come by train which stops at the National Park Village, which borders the protected landscape. No matter what time of year you visit here, you are guaranteed spectacular sights and thrilling outdoor pursuits.
