Tolaga Bay Inn

Tolaga Bay is our gateway to the coast, steeped in historical and cultural significance. Our Eastcoast region is a region of firsts. First to see the sun, in the world, first for our Maori people via Maui and first for our European people via Captain Cook. It is rich in beauty, history and raw Eastcoast hospitality.

The Tolaga Bay Inn was originally built in 1886 by Blind Charlie for Captain Glover. Years later it was destroyed in a tragic fire and rebuilt again in 1930. Architecturally designed by French-Canadian architect Sholto Smith, the Tolaga Bay Inn is a classic example of the Tudor House design he became famous for. The Tolaga Bay Inn is one of just 100 buildings the celebrated Smith designed in New Zealand, and one of just two commercial buildings he designed in this style.

Bar:

The Public Bar The local public bar is open seven days a week and serves as the social hub of our community. We're open midday to midnight seven days a week.

Uawa Café:

The Uawa Café occupies a sunny corner of the Tolaga Bay Inn. Year-round, an ever-changing mix of visitors and locals spill out on to the side walk enjoying the sun, great coffee, delicious food and friendly conversation.

The Tolaga Bay Inn kitchen also caters for those looking for something on the run. Our takeaway menu is perfect for a quick and easy family meal, or those wanting to take in sunset on the beach or at the end of the wharf.

Accommodation at the Tolaga Bay Inn is perfect for the budget-conscious traveler looking for a comfortable, well-appointed stay in the heart of the East Coast. We are currently undergoing a restoration and preservation project of the Inn to help rejuvenate her wary bones.
