“Kerosene Creek is a beautiful free hot spring which flows through natural bush with a spectacular 2 metre waterfall into a secluded hot pool.”
Kerosene Creek hot spring flows through natural bush with a stunning 2 metre waterfall to a quiet pool of hot water. Bathers have excavated small smooth rocks to form their own little hot pools that you can sit next to and enjoy the hot water cascading down. It's a beautiful way to relax after a busy day. As it is an isolated spot, it is a good idea to use common sense and take valuable belongings with you to the hot pool. It is recommended not to put your head under the water in natural hot pools.
Distance from Rotorua:33 km – about a 35 minute drive.
How to get there: Heading south from Rotorua on the road to Taupo (about 30 km), pass the turn off to Murupara on your left, pass a lake on your right, then take the next left turn. The signpost is Old Waiotapu Road. Stop 2.2 km down the road and pull over to the grass verge on the right. Follow the path down a couple of hundred metres beside the stream to the pool itself. Enjoy.
Insider Tip: If driving between Rotorua and Taupo, make sure you include this in your trip as it’s only a 3 minute drive from the main highway. Visit in daylight hours.
We went in winter (July 2022) and it was great! Not too busy and the water and landscape were spectacular. Don’t forget your swim gear and towel!
