The building opened as St Stephen's parochial School in 1861 and was at centre of the Battle of Mount Street during the 1916 Easter Rising. The school closed in 1969 and did not re-open again until 1998, when it opened its doors as the Schoolhouse hotel. Completely refurbished in March 2006, the Schoolhouse hotel has retained many of its original features from its days as St. Stephen's Parochial School. Its former classrooms now host the award-winning 'Schoolhouse Restaurant' and the lively and popular Schoolhouse Bar.
