“The second highest falls in Canada”

Standing up to its name; a Cree word meaning “the magnificent”, Takakkaw Falls are the second highest falls in Western Canada, dropping a soaring 384m / 1260ft to valley bottom. The falls are easily accessible with only a short walk from the parking lot, which is located 13 km from the Trans Canada Highway, at Field, on the Little Yoho Valley Road.

We stopped here on our road trip from Saskatoon to Vancouver with our pups in August 2016. It is a MUST SEE!

The road to the falls parking lot is bit challenging if you are driving a larger vehicle as there are very sharp switchbacks. There is signage to warn drivers about these conditions- TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY! Small cars or SUVS are fine, but drive carefully.

The views are stunning driving to the falls and once you arrive. We did not do the hike to the falls as we were camping in their backwoods camp site with a beautiful view.

If you are wanting to camp, bring cash to pay for your campsite as there is not a park booth to pay at. There is approximately 500m-1km to walk to reach the campground so be prepared to lug your gear. There are some carts available to transport your gear but they are limited and usually spoken for for several minutes to an hour, so lay claim if you can. Not all the campsites have fire pits so bring cooking equipment just in case you aren't able to get one. The ground of the campsites was hard packed gravel and can do a number on your tent pegs if you are lighter utility pegs. There is a facility in the centre of the campground for potable water and a shed for food storage which is required for bear safety..

We encountered a storm when we began setting up our tent, if you see the cloud rolling over the peaks of the mountains, HAUL ASS! The storm clouds showed up and we were pelted with rain and heavy winds within 5 minutes without having our tent pegged down fully or our equipment inside the tent! Mother Nature is wicked in the valley should you encounter her.

Definitely stop here. It's a quick hike and absolutely incredible. I had never seen a waterfall so tall.

AMAZING waterfall! The hike is easy to get to the base of the waterfall. However, if you want a more challenging hike, and to get a more up close and personal view, go ahead and do some rock climbing! Just be careful, watch your self, and be courteous of other people around you.
