The Indigenous Tourism Trail is an opportunity to experience and learn about Aboriginal culture and heritage. Stretching from Poonindie near Port Lincoln to the head of the Great Australian Bight, the trail provides, in either direction, a unique self-drive experience. The Poonindie Native Training Mission near Port Lincoln was opened in 1850 and the original church still remains. Port Lincoln’s Kuju Aboriginal Arts and the Ceduna Arts and Culture Centre showcase original Aboriginal art by local artists from the region. The west coast language centre promotes the traditional Aboriginal languages of the region. The Scotdesco and Koonibba communities are interesting places to visit. An enchanting waterhole and the historic ‘Church of Our Redeemer’ at Koonibba are both thought-provoking places to visit whilst Scotdesco is the home of the Big Wombat. The trail concludes at Head of Bight with its breathtaking natural beauty. Poonindie Native Training Mission, Scotdesco and Koonibba are open all times as they are natural sites. Kuju Aboriginal Arts is open 9am to 5:30pm, Monday to Friday. Ceduna Arts and Culture Centre and the Ceduna Language Centre are open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Head of Bight is open 8am to 5pm, seven days.
