“The whitest sand on earth”
On the southern shores of the splendid Jervis Bay Marine Park, Hyams Beach is a charming seaside village in the Shoalhaven region with an eponymous stretch of fine white sand. Gentle waves from the bay lap onto the beach, a beautiful area for rolling out your towel and relaxing on the soft sand.
The waters are perfect for swimming, snorkelling, fishing and stand-up paddleboarding. Other wonderful things to do include the Hyams Beach trail, also known as the bird spotter’s walk. Keep a look out for colourful rosellas. The walk in the Jervis Bay National Park begins at the beach’s southern end.
The White Sands Walk includes Hyams Beach. This walk, on some of the whitest sands in the world, begins north of Hyams Beach at Greenfield Beach picnic area, in Vincentia, and takes up to 90 minutes. South of Hyams Beach is Booderee National Park, where there are guided tours with Aboriginal rangers.
You’ll find a range of places to stay, from old-style beach cottages to luxury beachfront holiday houses. At the Hyams Beach Store and Cafe is a delicious selection of delights, many made with locally sourced produce. You can order gourmet hampers for picnics from Hyams Beach Hampers.
The marine park is a haven for bottlenose dolphins, fur seals, little penguins and other creatures, such as humpback whales on their annual migration along the NSW South Coast. Tours to see the dolphins and whales depart from Huskisson, a short drive north of Hyams Beach and 2h 40 min from Sydney or Canberra.
