“From jail cell to contemporary art”
A rare case of a heritage listed building turned modern arts space , The Lock Up is nothing if not unique.
Built in 1861 as a Police station and Lock up, it is part of a row of 19th century buildings that reflects the wealth of early Newcastle.
When Police Station closed in the 80's, the space was developed to be a place for art, culture and heritage. Today it is a dedicated multidisciplinary contemporary arts centre and inner city hub for creative thinking and doing.
Head along to an exhibit, a show, or a talk and marvel at how far the building, and Newcastle, have come.
